What do companies need to know about plagiarism?

When the word “plagiarism” comes to mind, you might think about someone copying from an online source for a research paper or using words from a short story or book and saying they are his or her own. While it is true that these are examples of plagiarism, the topic can be much more broad. Therefore, it is important for Atlanta business owners to avoid copying the work of another, whether purposefully or inadvertently.

Plagiarism.org defines plagiarism as using another person or company’s work as your own. In addition to things like novels, essays and research, other items can be plagiarized like movies, artwork, poetry and music. You might also be accused of copying advertising or online content, such as the words written in a company blog or article. Plagiarism violates copyright laws and can be subject to criminal as well as civil consequences.

How do you avoid plagiarizing another’s work? One of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure your own work is completely original. You might use another source for research or to quote examples, but properly citing the source or author is a good way to protect yourself, as we have done with the above source in this post. Quoting brief passages or statements may be acceptable, but should be done sparingly and always in a way that makes the reader clear that the quote came from the original source. In the case of an idea, song or other type of media, you will need to be sure your own work has little to no resemblance to another source.

An accusation of plagiarism is a serious matter, and that is why it is so important to be sure your work is completely original. The information in this blog is not meant to replace a lawyer’s advice.
