University of Georgia involved in business litigation over name

Any business can find themselves the subject of a lawsuit for numerous reasons. One recent example can be found in the University of Georgia system. The University of Georgia has become engaged in business litigation over the proposed name of one of the system's schools. A lawsuit has been filed against the University system by Regent University, located in another state.

The lawsuit claims that the University of Georgia's attempt to rename one of their schools Georgia Regents University is trademark infringement. Regent University's President stated in August that they would take the issue to court, though reports of the lawsuit did not surface until more recently. The lawsuit comes after Augusta State University students expressed their upset over the name change on Facebook. At least one student is hopeful that the lawsuit will encourage the Board of Regents to reconsider the name.

Located in Virginia, Regent University is seeking damages totaling three times more than what the school has suffered. Reports note that such a lawsuit could be expensive beyond the damages, and may be funded by taxpayer dollars. Taxpayers in Georgia are upset about the spending, stating that there are better ways to spend taxpayer dollars. One Georgia resident stated that the money would be better served if used to provide education and technology. Another believes that the litigation could have been avoided.

Business litigation affects more than just the individual entities involved in the dispute. In this case, two well-established universities are battling over trademark law, which has affected at least one community in our state. As the lawsuit moves forward, both sides will have the opportunity to plead their case and seek a reasonable resolution.
