As of the end of August, fast food workers across nearly 60 major cities in the United States, including in Georgia, have gone on strike. They are fighting against wage and hour law issues such as no paid sick time or vacation. Other issues center on low wages and little to no health benefits.
The fast food industry makes billions of dollars per year. For example, burger giant McDonald’s made nearly $21 billion dollars in profit. It is said that the CEOs for the six top fast food companies earn a combined total of approximately $40 million per year, which makes their hourly rate somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,000. Workers are currently making between $7.25 and $8.00 per hour in comparison.
Then there is the fact that most work no more than 30 hours a week, and managers are alleged to play favorites when it comes to scheduling. There is no paid sick time or vacation time, so if they aren’t working, they aren’t getting paid. According to some striking workers, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Therefore, fast food workers want not only higher wages, but they also want the right to become part of a union.
Many people in Georgia may be of the opinion that big corporation CEO’s make their money at the expense of the people doing the work and often skirt their responsibilities under wage and hour law. Many businesses in Georgia struggle to provide their employees with the best wages and benefits possible. It hardly seems fair that these large corporations are allowed to continue to treat their employees the way they do while business owners in our state pay the price.
